For me, really really delicious french toast has a few musts: must be fried in butter, must made with fluffy bread (such as brioche or challah), and must have lots of flavor– and this recipe nails ’em all! Orange zest makes the toast incredibly bright, and reduced orange juice and Grand Marnier make an awesomely orange-y syrup. Enjoy this fabulous french toast for a holiday brunch or a leisurely weekend breakfast. May I suggest some bacon on the side too? Enjoy this truly lovely recipe for the best orange french toast, I know you’ll love it!
Orange French Toast with Grand Marnier Maple Syrup Recipe
Orange French Toast With Grand Marnier Maple Syrup
Servings: 4 Servings
Ingredients
For The French Toast:
- zest of 2 oranges
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1+ 1/2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1+ 1/4 cup whole milk
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 5 eggs
- 2 tsp Grand Marnier or Cointreau
- 1 loaf challah sliced into 1 inch thick slices
For The Syrup:
- 1/4 cup Grand Marniner or Cointreau
- 1/2 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
- 1/4 cup maple syrup
- powdered sugar for topping
- butter for frying
Instructions
Make the French Toast:
- Heat the oven to 180F. In a medium bowl, whisk together the orange zest, cinnamon, sugar, vanilla, whole milk, salt, eggs, and Grand Marnier. Spread the challah slices in a large dish or pan and pour the custard over the top. Turn and move the challah slices to soak in the custard evenly.
- Heat a large pan or griddle over medium low heat. Coat the pan with butter and fry a few slices at a time, about 2-3 minutes per side, adding more butter to the pan between batches. Transfer the french toast slices to a wire rack in the oven to keep warm as you cook.
Meanwhile, Make the Syrup:
- Combine the grand mariner, maple syrup, and orange juice in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer, and reduce heat to medium low. Simmer for 20 minutes, or until the mixture has thickened slightly. (The syrup will thicken more upon cooling.)
- Serve the French toast topped with powdered sugar, extra butter, and the warm syrup!
