Orange French Toast With Grand Marnier Maple Syrup

Course: Breakfast, brunch, dessert + sweets, Main Dish
Servings: 4 Servings

Ingredients

For The French Toast:

  • zest of 2 oranges
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1+ 1/2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1+ 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 5 eggs
  • 2 tsp Grand Marnier or Cointreau
  • 1 loaf challah sliced into 1 inch thick slices

For The Syrup:

  • 1/4 cup Grand Marniner or Cointreau
  • 1/2 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • powdered sugar for topping
  • butter for frying

Instructions

Make the French Toast:

  • Heat the oven to 180F. In a medium bowl, whisk together the orange zest, cinnamon, sugar, vanilla, whole milk, salt, eggs, and Grand Marnier. Spread the challah slices in a large dish or pan and pour the custard over the top. Turn and move the challah slices to soak in the custard evenly.
  • Heat a large pan or griddle over medium low heat. Coat the pan with butter and fry a few slices at a time, about 2-3 minutes per side, adding more butter to the pan between batches. Transfer the french toast slices to a wire rack in the oven to keep warm as you cook.

Meanwhile, Make the Syrup:

  • Combine the grand mariner, maple syrup, and orange juice in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer, and reduce heat to medium low. Simmer for 20 minutes, or until the mixture has thickened slightly. (The syrup will thicken more upon cooling.)
  • Serve the French toast topped with powdered sugar, extra butter, and the warm syrup!
